<image:title>Articles - Interconnected Law - Introduction and context - Politically and socially, we face a rising tide of crises. Social bonds are breaking down, with political polarisation, growing economic inequality and rising far-right politics in the UK. We also face serious ecological crises, of which climate change is the most prominent, and we are living far beyond what is sustainable. Responding to these entangled crises, Interconnected Law is a new legal paradigm (designed for a range of actors) in which law should cultivate harmonious socio-ecological relations.</image:title>

      <image:title>Articles - Interconnected Law - Alex May</image:title>
<image:caption>Alex May is a British legal theorist and researcher who started a PhD at Birkbeck University in 2022. Prior, Alex completed a law undergraduate at Oxford University and an LLM at the London School of Economics. Alex wrote his dissertation about Earth Jurisprudence and human rights law - planting the seeds of Interconnected Law. Mapping ideas for his dissertation, Alex realised what he envisioned was (at least) a PhD scale project. This crystallised a wish to work on ideas about law and ways to communicate them to change our legal system and the wider world.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Plastic Nests - A thematically related study was published in February 2025 titled ‘Birds documenting the Anthropocene: Stratigraphy of plastic in urban bird nests’. The paper reports that “Plastic may be used as a global marker for the Anthropocene, which allows plastic items to be used as “index fossils” to date with accuracy sediment layers within the Anthropocene epoch” (Hiemestra et al., 2025).</image:title>
<image:caption>The study spotlights a unique nest found beneath the Oude Turfmarkt dock in Amsterdam. This nest was constructed on an unused foundation pile, in a 20cm deep hollow space created by the shell of a slightly longer metal pipe around the pile. The researchers “observed recent top layers of facemasks and the deepest layers of nest material showed plastic dating back to the early 1990s”. The image to the left shows an assortment of the 635 artificial items found when the nest was deconstructed. The facemasks signal the COVID era, present in high numbers in the 2019 - 2020 layers of the Oude Turfmarkt nest. McDonalds branded plastics are a consistent feature in every layer of the nest - a whole story in itself.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Cocaine Shrimp - Understanding the complexity of the situation is only possible through webs of mutual support between citizen samplers, universities, and relevant organisations. Through their combined efforts, research from a range of angles can be triangulated to consider the impacts of seasonal, climate, and policy change in the immediate and the long term. The open publication of new data is a vital piece of the puzzle. Peter learnt that there is cocaine in the shrimp as a result of a study published by King’s College University, in collaboration with the University of Sussex in 2019.</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Cocaine Shrimp - Concern has also been raised about contraceptive pharmaceuticals, which enter the water through the sewage system, affecting invertebrate breeding rates. When present in excessive concentrations, estrogen in the water suppresses the capacity for various species to reproduce. In Peter's words, “it’s like everybody’s taking the pill”. There’s something shocking about that, and, at the same time, an easily traceable logic that the substances we consume go through human bodies, get flushed down toilets, and when raw sewage is discharged into the rivers they find their way into other bodies.</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s all twisted together. The same goes for pesticides sprayed onto crops, leached into the soil, and transferred to rivers through runoff or seepage into groundwater. Following these chains, and noticing the stories lodged in each link is a way into conversations that are hard to unhear. We need more of those.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Cocaine Shrimp - We spoke about river sampling as akin to reading an environment, attempting to decode the signals radiating out from river life, and river death. The problems are all there whether we notice them or not. Hence, there is an immense power in sampling to piece together the myriad pressures piled onto water ways. More resources are needed to make complete sense of the cocaine in shrimp of the Deben, and beyond, and broaden the scope of who can afford to engage. In the sense, the shrimp story is yet to fully unfurl.</image:title>
<image:caption>The point of this article is that we can’t sum up life today in any one object, material, or polluted body - no matter how compelling the shrimp story is. What we can do is use these stories as a gateway to proper discussion, trying to tease more complex emotional responses out of people.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Time Travelling - For context, we’d just released a holistic 25 year strategy based around the idea of heading for an ecologically safe, and socially just future (inspired by the work of Donella Meadows and Kate Raworth).</image:title>
<image:caption>To help structure the plan we conceptualised five interrelated and interconnected missions relating to Climate, Water, Nature, People and Place, but we had done that reluctantly - our mantra was, these are intersecting problems and they need to be considered in the round. So, we drew the concept as a picture that referenced the embedded economy model. All issues nested, like a Russian doll.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Time Travelling - Which is where my colleague Liz Hutchins comes in, she had been to a weekend course on organising for Community Climate Action held at CAP. There she met the wonderful Rob Hopkins, who had given a presentation about Time Travel as a means of shifting perspectives.</image:title>
<image:caption>She spoke about how his playfulness lit up the room, and kept sharing this image, which seemed to make us all instantly smile. From there, time travel for Future Food was born in the coming together of a whole heap of ideas and people. The culmination of this was the idea to repurpose an inflatable planetarium the Park purchased as part of our Dark Skies Work to create a Time Machine to create really interesting ways of engaging non-technical experts in evidence led, policy development.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Interspecies Council - Trying to tune into the experiences and behaviours of another species seems to dissolve some of the usual human ego. It’s worth noting that the absence of any sense of affinity for a part of nature tells a story in itself, and I wonder how the Interspecies Council method would go down with a crowd who report feeling little to no connectedness with other species.</image:title>
<image:caption>My current understanding is that the IC is a way to indirectly interface with the more-than-human.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Interspecies Council - “What kind of species is it that leaves a warm home on a rainy night to ferry salamanders across a road? It’s tempting to call it altruism, but it’s not. There is nothing selfless about it. The night heaps reward on the givers as well as the recipients. We get to be there, to witness this amazing rite, and, for an evening, to enter into a relationship with other beings, as different from ourselves as we can imagine.” (1)</image:title>

<image:caption>To be clear, the questions and angles I've laced into this piece stem from the power and potential I think the Interspecies Council holds. It is heartening to feel like that, and motivating to think about the possibilities future evolution will undoubtedly release. Thinking broadly about the Interspecies Councils held since Phoebe Tickell created the method in 2021, my understanding is as follows.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Climate Lens - Curious about the project, we came up with 10 questions for the hosts. We hoped to build a better understanding of the use of cinema as a conduit for lasting climate consciousness and wanted to explore the mixed landscape of film and TV engaging with climate breakdown</image:title>
<image:caption>The podcast is peppered with discussion of imagined futures, and alternate realities - utopian, post-apocalyptic, dystopian, and all that lies between and beyond. The series kicks off with Don't Look Up, Landman, The Simpsons, and How to Blow Up a Pipeline. The defined focus of each episode grounds discussions which often feel ‘too real’ or ‘too distant’ to really absorb. Tolly and Jake explore cognitive dissonance, climate anxiety, fossil fuel propaganda, amongst connected climate and communications questions.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In late November, I met with Jed Dutton to write a story for the pollen project. The basis of this article is a write-up of the conversation we recorded in an Edinburgh bar. Jed is the founder of an Edinburgh organisation called The Big Green - a staple of the city’s independent dance and clubbing scene. I’ve always been intrigued by its roots and growth and wanted to speak to Jed to understand the story behind the twist in the Big Green business model which diverts ticket costs to local eco charities and social initiatives like neighbourhood food banks. You will find a number of other articles and resources woven through the write up of our back-and forth.</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Party for the Planet - “The first place I did a party was upstairs at the Mash House. A lot of people know about the Mash House main room but more hidden upstairs, there's a little room where you can go and dance. Most people don't know it's there but we managed to fill it a few times - it's always going to have a proper place in my heart.</image:title>
<image:caption>Sneaky Pete’s is an amazing venue, pretty much any event I go to there I'll enjoy. It's a tiny little sweat box where everyone's just having a great time enjoying the music. The Bongo Club I love as well, they've got some really good nights there. And there were a lot of other interesting party ones along the way that I enjoyed. Edinburgh is definitely an interesting environment venue-wise to navigate because there's lots of big venues that sometimes don't get filled and then there's smaller ones that get totally rammed. The thing I love the most is not necessarily the venues themselves but the people that are doing all sorts of interesting shit every other week.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Articles - Individual Liberty - My freedom to be or do anything does not exclusively begin with me, but relies on that network of relations of which I am a part and that is also supportive of me. These conditions for flourishing are the interlocking network of social relations and support networks that allow me to get an education, secure a job, access healthcare, etc. The question is whether such an interpretation has any value for current legal practices and/or informing nonhuman legal personality. <image:title>Articles - Individual Liberty - The famous case of Donoghue v Stevenson (of a lady who became ill after drinking a bottle of ginger beer with a decomposed snail in it and successfully sued the manufacturer and the person who sold it to her) established the neighbour principle: people owe a duty of care to others who are directly affected by their actions. The diffuse nature of the neighbour principle is found in its recognition of a kind of relationality that precedes the individual subject’s exercise of liberty. [AI generated image]</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Out among the hills - I was born and raised in Sheffield, and spent much of my formative years exploring the windswept heather and gritstone edges of our local Peak District - first walking, with my mum and brother, and then fell running and biking through my teenage years. After graduating from university in 2023 I moved to Edinburgh to live with my partner (and pollen creator) Lucy. I have spent much of the last year getting to know Scotland’s remote places and deepening my own personal understanding of, and connection with nature. I’m currently working with Lawyers for Nature to write a research report on the Rights of Nature, and I’m looking to find more permanent political work around nature. This picture was taken by my friend Cameron, in Bob Scott’s bothy, during the trip I describe in this article.</image:title>

<image:title>Articles - Rethinking Legal Personality - RETHINKING LEGAL PERSONALITY TO MEET THE NATURE AND NEEDS OF AN OAK TREE: Legal definitions are extremely important. They set the rules of the game and draw the line that separates the players from the pieces. For example, any definition of legal personality has two main roles. First, it determines which beings can access the legal system as a person. Second, it outlines the rights and responsibilities of those legal persons within that legal system.</image:title>

<image:caption>The woods do not exist for humans to pass judgement upon their beauty. They are not desolate until the moment we enter them nor abandoned on our departure. When there, we are with all of that non-human life. The woods taught me about the opposite of loneliness and I am now accepting the fact that I will never be able to, nor need I, force how that feels or what that means into words alone.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Changing the language we use to address and describe non-human life may seem unnecessarily frilly. Maybe you see this as obsessive or unrelated to big questions of mass decarbonisation or battling deforestation. I’d argue quite the opposite. These subtle shifts are an indicator of a fundamentally transformed attitude. Better respecting the life-cycle of a river or of a bird, bug or mammal species starts within our minds. From here it can be woven into how we educate young people and into our legal and political systems. I hope you can sense the enchantment that I felt, and continue to feel, with the Earth and the intricacies and rhythmic changes we can observe each day. Even in a bustling city, you can catch these moments by simply looking up to the sky, and the clouds, colours and creatures held there. Despite all humans have done, the Earth continues to dance and to flourish wherever possible. We must all be eternally grateful for that. Lucy</image:caption>
